The last few weeks I have been selfish and stopped asking
people for their choices and have been picking the tracks myself and if I’m
perfectly honest I quite like this new selfish path so I’m going to stick to it
for now.
This track actually started out life as a poem but with the
encouragement of super-producer Rick Rubin Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis
with the rest of the band turned it into one of one of the most iconic songs of
the 90’s and probably the bands most famous record to date.
The track written by Kiedis centres around his feelings of disillusionment
and depression connected to the rest of the band. Much of the time when the
band was in the studio John Frusciante and Flea would smoke Marijuana and
Kiedis felt this created a gap between them as he had been sober for 3 years
and no longer did drugs of any kind.
The title and large portions of the song deal directly
Kiedis’ time involved with drugs in LA where he would go and take cocaine and
heroin under a bridge.
The song was used on the legendary album ‘Blood Sugar Sex
Magik’ and was realised as a single on 10th March 1992. Despite it
being so famous it only managed to reach number 13 in the UK chart and that was
only when it was reissued in 1994. (It had previously reached number 26) And strangely
it is remembered by some music fans as a hit for the girl group All Saints in
1998.
At one point or another every one of us has felt like we are
there, ‘under the bridge’ so press play and look back at how far you’ve come or
if you’re in that place now use this song as proof that the only way is up.
Enjoy.
