Throwback Thursday Bonus Edition: Shaggy - 'It Wasn't Me' AND 'Angel'

Today is a special day, not because it’s Halloween but because it’s Throwback Thursday, but not just any Throwback Thursday, today is a special bonus edition. I am giving you not one song, but two!! That’s two doses of Shaggy, what more could you people want!

Now I’m 23, and back in the day these 2 records were everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Every kid and teenager in the UK if not the world was all over this shit.
First off ‘It wasn’t me.’ Charted at number 1 in the UK and if you can’t sing the hook to this I don’t wanna know you. This song meant every 11 and 12 year old male kid in the country spent a good two months walking round like ‘yeah Shaggy man I feel your pain, these women keep stressin me!’

Which brings me to ‘Angel.’ Everyone knew every word, and don’t even front like you didn’t. This time all the boys had moved on from having women all over the world, to declaring their undying love for the girl they sit next to maths because she let them borrow her pen.
It was crazy growing up in those days man! Crazy!

Anyway for the nostalgia trip if nothing else hit play these classics.

In Memory of Jam Master Jay: 21st Jan 1965 - 30th Oct 2002

Jam Master Jay born Jason Mizell’s influence on hip hop cannot be underestimated. But if you’re a hip hop fan you already know that. You know that famous Run DMC sound? Yeah that came from him. It was he and legendary producer Rick Rubin who came up with the ideas and created the sound that would be the Run DMC signature. But 11 years ago today he was gunned down and murdered outside his studio in Jamaica, Queens, New York. At time of writing his murder has yet to be solved.

As a member of Run DMC he established himself as one of the best DJ’s out there, but he not only worked behind the turntables he also played live instruments on some of the Run DMC albums, basically much of what became the Run DMC ‘style’ and sound came from him, he knew what would work and knew what they had to do to be successful.
Shortly before his untimely death he also worked with a young 50 Cent way before any of that buzz started. He was a student of the game he loved music. He is a legend, not only in New York, not only in hip hop but in music full stop.

And to celebrate the life of Jam Master Jay I’m going to bring you some classic Run DMC in the form of ‘It’s Like That.’ Enjoy.

NEW MUSIC!!! Eminem feat Rihanna - Monster

Overnight we got treated to the latest instalment from Eminem’s upcoming album Marshall Mathers LP 2 which is released November 5th.

Now as you can image this track is more on a ‘pop’ kind of tip but as I’ve always said just because something has a pop sound doesn’t mean it can’t be good. And as far as hip hop singles go this is a very good one. I am no fan of Rihanna but she sings the hook here and does what she does, anyone could sing the hook but the star quality of the name Rihanna will help out in terms of publicity.

For what it’s worth I really like the track and I’m seriously looking forward to getting my hands on the album when it drops. This my friends is going to be absolutely huge.

Premier League Weekend Review

I owe you (the readers I’ve got left) an apology. There hasn’t been a lot of activity on here recently but I have been working on other things. The main thing that I have in the pipeline is my own website. It will be launching in the next few weeks and is going to be called In Off The Post. Feel free to give it a like on Facebook.  www.facebook.com/inoffthepost.net

It will be covering football in the Midlands, Women’s football and loads of other stuff. So a lot of my focus has been going on that, and also over the last couple of months I have gained a girlfriend and apparently in these situations you are expected to see and spend time together (Crazy I know) So yeah the bottom line of this story is that free time has been a little thin on the ground so the blog has taken a hit. But… I am going to try and do something about it so don’t give up on me just yet.
So the 1st part of my blogging resurrection is coming to you this afternoon in the shape of a review of the Premier League action this weekend.

I’m going to start at Old Trafford where Manchester United came from behind twice to scramble victory against a very resilient Stoke side. Once more United weren’t exactly firing on all cylinders but at least this time in front of the Old Trafford faithful they managed to come out on top, with Hernandez netting a late winner. How many times have we said that in recent years? But the thing that really took my eye from this game was the booing of Nani. I mean yes his performances may not have been up to scratch but how is booing him going to help?
Probably the biggest game of the weekend took place yesterday between Chelsea and Manchester City and it was Mourinho’s men who came out on top. In little part thanks to yet another error from City keeper Joe Hart. It has got to the point now where errors like these are now far more the norm than they really should be so the biggest story at the Bridge was Fernando Torres. Not only did Torres capitalise on said error from Hart but he had a brilliant game, no one has been more critical of the Spaniard than me in recent years but does the fact that he has finally put a couple of good performances together mean he is finally getting back to some decent from? Or are those in Chelsea all getting a bit too excited over nothing again?

Another week and more goals for Suarez and Sturridge at Liverpool. The header from Suarez from the edge of the area was truly exceptional. They might still be a little frail defensively but with how good they are going forward they may well have enough to get into the top four. I think talk of a title challenge is jumping the gun a little bit but they are playing very well at the moment. But the real surprise package of the season so far has been Southampton.
They have built a very good team down there and they are playing brilliantly well right now. They have plenty of good young players, young English players at that, and they comfortably beat Fulham at the weekend. And the longer the season goes on it can’t be long until we see Adam Lallana in an England shirt surely?

Elsewhere Sunderland triumphed in the derby but the jury remains out as to whether this will kick start their season. Everton beat Villa to keep up their good early season form, and Arsenal despite not playing well eventually overcame strugglers Crystal Palace. West Ham went away to Swansea and came out with a very good point as did Cardiff from Norwich. This isn’t because Norwich are a good team but as a newly promoted team every point gained away from home is a good point. In fact Norwich could be in trouble; they have spent a lot of money but don’t really seem to have improved for it. Fer (sportsmanship issues aside) and Redmond are good players but the rest are yet to convince.
So that’s all for now folks I’ll be back with something else for you soon

Throwback Thursday: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge

That’s right ladies and gentlemen it’s that time once again… Thursday has arrived, and that can only mean one thing…. The weekend is only 2 days away! Oh and it’s time for Throwback Thursday.

The last few weeks I have been selfish and stopped asking people for their choices and have been picking the tracks myself and if I’m perfectly honest I quite like this new selfish path so I’m going to stick to it for now.
This track actually started out life as a poem but with the encouragement of super-producer Rick Rubin Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis with the rest of the band turned it into one of one of the most iconic songs of the 90’s and probably the bands most famous record to date.

The track written by Kiedis centres around his feelings of disillusionment and depression connected to the rest of the band. Much of the time when the band was in the studio John Frusciante and Flea would smoke Marijuana and Kiedis felt this created a gap between them as he had been sober for 3 years and no longer did drugs of any kind.
The title and large portions of the song deal directly Kiedis’ time involved with drugs in LA where he would go and take cocaine and heroin under a bridge.

The song was used on the legendary album ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ and was realised as a single on 10th March 1992. Despite it being so famous it only managed to reach number 13 in the UK chart and that was only when it was reissued in 1994. (It had previously reached number 26) And strangely it is remembered by some music fans as a hit for the girl group All Saints in 1998.
At one point or another every one of us has felt like we are there, ‘under the bridge’ so press play and look back at how far you’ve come or if you’re in that place now use this song as proof that the only way is up. Enjoy.
